There are many different myths related to green tea during pregnancy, whether it’s a good idea to drink green tea or not. With all the stresses of pregnancy, it can be difficult to figure out whether this is a good idea or not. One thing is certain, studies have tried to figure it out and we have all the answers for you.

Is Green Tea Safe For Pregnant Women?

It’s important to note that green tea, even matcha teas are safe to drink when you are pregnant. They do have less caffeine when compared to coffee, around 25mg when compared to ~95mg. However, that doesn’t mean you can drink unlimited amounts of green tea. You should try to limit yourself to around 2 cups of tea per day.

After all, green tea has a very high amount of catechins, which are substances that prevent folic acid absorption. Since your body needs this acid during pregnancy to prevent any type of neural tube effects, you can’t drink a ton of green tea. But a little bit here and there will be fine.

Can It Affect Your Child?

One of the worst things to add to your diet while pregnant is any type of caffeine. This is a stimulant that will enter the baby’s bloodstream. The problem here is that your baby could potentially take more time to metabolize. Fetal development can be an issue, which is why going overboard with green tea while pregnant might not seem like the best idea.

As long as you drink green tea with low caffeine levels, you’ll be more than ok. Things like miscarriages, low birth weight, premature birth, or leukemia can end up affecting your child if you overdo it as with anything in excess. Thankfully, green tea should NOT damage your baby in any way, although you have to keep things in moderation.

Are There Any Caffeine Limits Per Day?

If you want to enjoy your green tea during pregnancy, you’ll want to limit caffeine consumption to under 200mg per day. Ideally, you want to talk with your doctor and see if they approve.

In general, it’s ok to have a few cups of green tea every day, but we recommend up to 2 at most. Think about the caffeine levels in your energy drinks, other teas, soft drinks, chocolate and so on.

Is It Safe To Drink Green Tea During Pregnancy?

Yes, you can have a great green tea pregnancy experience. However, you want to keep the caffeine levels under 200mg every day. Drinking green tea in moderation would be the right thing to do here.

It will take some preparation and monitoring the caffeine levels in your diet, but this is all worth it seeing how good green tea is for you. So treat yourself! Enjoying some green tea while pregnant can be amazing.

It’s refreshing, and a wonderful way to get past the stress of being pregnant!
